How We Prepare Your Lawn for a Weed Free Spring
Assess the lawn
We start by walking the lawn to note bare patches, mossy areas and dense weed colonies. Knowing whether the problem is moss, compacted soil or poor turf density helps us pick the right action. We look at drainage, light levels and foot traffic. In Devon lawns can suffer from wet winters and variable summers, so identifying where moisture sits matters for long term control.
Remove weeds carefully
Where weeds are sparse we handweed, removing roots to prevent regrowth. For larger patches we scarify or rake out thatch and weed debris. Scarifying early spring or early autumn helps lift dead material and exposes soil for overseeding. For mossy areas a stiff rake will clear the surface and let light and seed reach the soil. We always take care to avoid leaving open patches that allow new weeds to gain a foothold.
Improve soil and structure
Healthy soil makes healthy grass. We aerate compacted lawns with a garden fork or a powered aerator on larger areas. This improves water movement and root growth. After aeration we top dress shallowly with a free draining soil and fine sand mix to help level and improve structure. A soil test can tell us if the lawn needs lime or a balanced fertiliser to correct pH and nutrient levels, helping grass compete with persistent weeds.
Mow, feed and overseed
Regular mowing at the correct height strengthens grass and weakens some weeds. We recommend cutting often and avoiding scalping. After scarifying and raking we overseed thin patches with a suitable grass seed for local conditions. Press the seed in gently so it contacts the soil. A light feed after new shoots establish will encourage a dense sward. For ongoing control clover and daisies often retreat when turf is healthy and dense.
Timing and routine care
The best windows for major work are early autumn and spring. Cooler temperatures and rain help new seed germinate.
