Choose the right spot
We start by watching the light at different times of day. A south facing location will get the best sun but may need shade in high summer. East facing spots catch gentle morning sun and remain cool later in the day. We consider sightlines from inside the house and how people will move between house and garden. If the ground slopes we think about level platforms and access for maintenance and drainage. Always check local planning rules if your deck will be raised or close to a boundary.
Pick materials that suit the climate
We favour materials that cope with damp and salt air along the coast. Pressure treated timber, naturally durable hardwoods and modern composite boards all have pros and cons. Timber gives a warm, natural look and is easy to repair. Composite requires less painting or staining but still benefits from regular cleaning. For posts and supports we use good ventilation to discourage rot. When choosing fixings we opt for stainless or coated metal that resists corrosion in our coastal air.
Think about shade and screening

Shrubs such as Hebe and small ornamental trees can frame views without overwhelming the space. For edible interest add herbs in pots and drought tolerant perennials in borders.
